Understanding the septic installation process in Arkansas

Before a new septic system can be installed in Arkansas, the property must be evaluated and a system design approved by the Arkansas Department of Health.

If you're just getting started, here's what you can expect.

  1. Contact a licensed Designated Representative (DR)

The first step is working with a licensed Designated Representative, commonly called a DR.

A DR evaluates your property, performs the necessary soil testing, and determines what type of septic system is appropriate based on factors such as soil conditions, available space, and the property's intended use.

The DR prepares the system design and submits the required information to the Arkansas Department of Health for approval.

Need help finding a DR? We can provide a list of licensed Designated Representatives in our area to help you get started.

  2. Obtain an approved septic permit

Once the system design has been reviewed and approved by the Arkansas Department of Health, a septic installation permit can be issued.

The approved permit outlines the requirements for your system, including the type of system, tank capacity, and layout of the lateral field or other treatment components.

This information allows installers to prepare an accurate quote based on the specific requirements of your property.

  3. Request an installation quote from BBB

Once you have your approved septic permit, our team can review the design and prepare a quote for the installation.

Because every property and system design is different, installation costs can vary depending on factors such as:

    • Type and size of the septic system
    • Tank capacity and required components
    • Soil conditions and property layout
    • Excavation requirements and accessibility
    • Conventional versus advanced treatment systems

We'll review the project requirements and explain the proposed installation work.

  4. Schedule your septic installation

After the quote is approved, we'll work with you to schedule the installation.

Our team has experience with excavation, septic tank placement, piping, distribution components, and lateral field installation.

We use our own excavation equipment and work to complete each installation according to the approved design while minimizing unnecessary disturbance to your property whenever possible.

  5. Final inspection and approval

Once the system has been installed, the required inspection and approval process must be completed before the system is placed into service.

Before the final inspection, we run our own quality checks on the work.

Our team will coordinate the installation work with the applicable inspection requirements and address any installation-related items needed for approval.

After installation, we'll also discuss important maintenance recommendations to help you care for your new system.

Types of septic systems we install

Not every property can accommodate the same type of septic system. Soil conditions, property size, household wastewater needs, and other factors all play a role in determining the appropriate design.

BBB Septic installs a variety of approved wastewater systems, including:

Conventional septic systems: Traditional systems use a septic tank and lateral field to collect, treat, and distribute wastewater into the surrounding soil.

Gravelless chamber systems: Connected chambers for a lot with a high groundwater table or little to no gravel.

Advanced wastewater treatment systems: Some properties require additional treatment due to soil conditions, available space, or other design considerations. BBB installs advanced treatment systems, including Norweco Singulair wastewater treatment units, when specified by the approved design.

Aerobic treatment units (ATUs): These add oxygen to the treatment tank.

Media filter systems: These filter wastewater through peat moss or sand.

Mound systems: The drain field sits in a built-up sand mound.

Septic system replacements: If an existing septic system has reached the end of its useful life or requires extensive repairs, replacement may be necessary. We can help homeowners understand the installation process and provide a quote once the appropriate design and permit have been approved.

If your property has unusual requirements, like shallow soil or an odd lot size, we install the system the approved design calls for.

Community STEP Systems: We also provide installation-related services and ongoing maintenance and repairs for septic tank effluent pumping (STEP) systems used in certain Northwest Arkansas communities. That includes Step system maintenance and repairs in Cave Springs, Bethel Heights, Elm Springs, and similar subdivisions.
