How often do I need to have my septic tank pumped?

The EPA recommends every 3–5 years, and the real-world interval depends on household size, diet, medical conditions, and how the system is used. The time-to-pump calculator lists 3.3 years for a 1,000-gallon tank with three people.

A tank should generally be pumped every one to three years or so. Do not wait for odor or backups. Individual schedules depend on use, size, and other factors the team helps determine.

If you cannot remember the last pump-out — or the seller of the home cannot tell you — it is time to clean the tank.
